V.I.Pace Bulletin # 8-3-07

 

3-9-07 St.Croix, Virgin Islands---Seymour Walter of the Barracudas Track Club/St.Croix Educational Complex High School was the first place finisher in the 25th Annual V.I.Pace Runners Labor Day 5K Road Race with a time of 19 minutes and 5 seconds.  Jeremy Laurent of the Virgin Islands National Guard was second in 21:18; Mirielle Smith of the St. Croix Track Club was third and the first place female in 23:00.  Errol Chichester was the third place male in 24:34; Amanda Wareshine was the second place female in 24:39; Brad Chafee was the fourth place male in 24:46; Will Franks was fifth in 27:03; Rebecca Pelayo was the third place female in 31:57; Jan Steinblarg was sixth in 38:32; Devorath Elecock was the fourth place female in 39:31. 

 

The annual 3.1 mile road race was held on an out-and-back course along the shore toward the Vincent Mason Pool in Frederiksted and the course started and finished near Ann Abramson Pier.  The event brings awareness to Prostrate Cancer.

 


 

       

24th V.I.Pace Runners Labor Day 5K—Prostrate Awareness see Jeanpierre and Barnard Win… 

Runners in the 24th Labor Day 5K were welcomed with a double rainbow hanging over the shore of historic Frederiksted making for relatively ideal flat and fast conditions for the race (the Oscar Henry Customs House on Strand St. along the waterfront past Dorsch Beach toward the Vincent Mason Pool and back) which saw four runners battle for the lead early in the race including veteran Richard Jeanpierre,  Educational Complex HS runners Ian Cuffy, Clint Smith and Central High School’s Caesar Tapia; they were followed closely by Greg Johnson, former V.I. national team runner and spokesman for Prostrate Cancer Awareness for the race. At the turnaround  and half-way point the group began to separate with Jeanpierre and Smith slightly ahead of Cuffy and Johnson.  Richard Jeanpierre pulled away from Cuffy with less that 200 meters to go to take first place with a time of 19 minutes and 40 seconds; Ian Cuffy was second in 19:58; Clint Smith was third in 20:20; Greg Johnson was fourth in 20:38.

Ninfa Barnard of ECHS was the first place female and fifth overall in 21:45; Amber Roberts was second in 25:44; Elizabeth Neunburger was second in 28:26; Elizabeth O’Toole was fourth in 28:56; Karen Pryor was fifth in 39:32; and Linda Nelson was sixth in 37:34.

Veteran runner Johnson talks about Prostate Cancer… 

9/4/05--St. Croix, Virgin Islands--The 23rd running of the Virgin Islands Pace Runners Labor Day 5K Road Race was in Frederiksted this year for the first time.  The course was out and back along the water front.  This year’s race was dedicated to Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.  Juan Robles was the top finisher with a time of 17 minutes and 15 seconds.  He ran the first mile in 5 minutes and 15 seconds with new comer Shane Duncan and Hansel Estephan in pursuit just a few seconds back.  They would take the first thee spots overall with Duncan second in 17:56 and Estephan third in 19:21.  Richard Jean-Pierre was fourth in 20:04 and veteran Greg Johnson, who is recovering from Prostate surgery was, fifth in 20:04; Jeremy Laurent sixth in 20:23; Alex Adams seventh in 22:22; Kevin Morgan eighth in 23:43; Larry Williams ninth in 23:48; Fred Flint tenth in 24:29 and Jack Branch eleventh in 26:49. 

Louise Stapleton was the first female in 24:05 and Devorath Elock second in 39:55. 

Participants heard Greg Johnson a former Virgin Islands National Team member and one of the V.I. top long distance runners ever having competed in the World Cross-Championships twice, the Central America and Caribbean Cross-Country Championships and the New York Mrathon, share his experience with combating the disease from the time it was detected, through surgery and recovery.  He stressed how important it is for males, especially black males over 40 to get tested regularly, the competence of his local doctor, Dr.John Franklin and support of friends, some of them runners and others who helped his confidence level throughout the ordeal. 

Information from the National Prostate Cancer Coalition…Awareness, Outreach, Advocacy, was distributed including the website: http://www.pcacolition.org  Johnson expressed his willingness to speak to groups and/or individuals about Prostate Cancer. 

The next event on the schedule is the V.I.Pace Runners/4-H Cross-Country Series in early October.  Also, the annual CoastWeeks Beach Relay on October 8 at 7am at Ha Penny Beach.

Robles and Stamper Take First Place in V.I. Pace Runners Labor Day 5K Road Race… 

9/5/04—St.Croix, V.I.—Juan Robles, a sophomore at the St. Croix Central High School was the first place finisher for the second year in a row in the annual Labor Day 5K Road Race on Monday.  Traditionally the east-end race starts in Southgate and finishes in Christiansted.  The venue changed this year to the scenic north shore and included a climb up the “Beast” (as it is known in the St. Croix Triathlon).  Robles was timed for the 3.1 mile distance in 20 minutes and 55 seconds.  Close on his heels was veteran Leopold Fredericks who took second place in 21:15; Hansel Estepan was third in 22:13; Roger Hatfield was fourth in 25:38 and Patrick Joy was fifth in 26:58. 

Theresa Stamper was the first place female finisher in the race with a time of 31:05 as only nine seconds separated the top three female finishers.  Tesha Distad, the early leader, was second in 31:05; Linda Whitaker was third in 31:10; Jacquline Lewis was fourth in 46:48; Hanna Lewis was fifth in 46:58.

Robles and Bennett Are Labor Day 5K Victors... 

September 1, 2003--St.Croix, Virgin Islands--Juan Robles a freshman at The St. Croix Central High School and Kathy Bennett of the St. Croix Roadrunners were the top finishers in the 19th Annual Labor Day 5K Road Race.  Robles, coached by Cris Encarnacion, led the field from the start and finished with a time of 18 minutes 7 seconds.  Juan graduated from John H. Woodson and appears to be on his way to claim the position as top high school runner in the Territory.  Bennett, the owner of Undercover Books is training for the Los Angles Marathon was the first female finisher in the race with a time of 30 minutes and 33 seconds.   

 The race is in celebration of Labor Day, in honor of the working class, it is also in the memory of Dale Goodwin of St. Croix. A cancer victim, she died last year.  She was the head of the family of children which made up the St. Croix Track Club.

Bohlke and Arthur Take Labor Day 5K Road Race...

September 1, 2002--St.Croix, Virgin Islands--The family of Dale Goodwin, including her mother and children were on hand to cheer on nearly a dozen runners and walkers who participated in the 18th Labor Day 5K Road Race which honored her memory. Dale was the coach of the St. Croix Track Club which was made-up mostly of her children.  As members of the club, the children often won medals in a range of age categories in track, cross-country and road races. 

Billy Bohlke was un-challenged as he ran the race for the first time and took first place overall in a time of 16 minutes and 36 seconds.  Earlier in the year, Bohlke set a Virgin Islands record for the distance on the track by running 15:15 in the Southeastern Conference Championships.  The record was previously held by Marlon Williams, 15:31 in the Barcelona Olympics.  Barrymore Berley was second in 21:37;  Troyson Raymond was third in 22:19; Alfred Anduze was fourth in 24:47; Errol Chichester was fifth in 26:43; Luke Frederick was seventh in 27:09; Jackson George was eight 52:49. 

Earthla Arthur took first place for females in the race with a time of 23:30; Jo Shim was second in 24:48; Barbara Knight was third in 51:58 and Krystal Diamond was fourth in 52:48.

The next race on the V.I. Pace Runners Calendar is the 4-H Cross-Country Series on October 9 at the University of the Virgin Islands, followed by the Coastweeks Beach Relay on October 12 at Ha Penny Beach.
