Local athletes and husband and wife, Betsy and Bill Gladfelter are entered in the 11th Annual Los Angles Marathon which took place on Sunday, March 3.  The race, one of the top marathons in the world, features a new course this year and drew over 19,000 participants.

Betsy Gladfelter, formerly the Director of the Farliegh Dickinson West Indies Laboratory in St. Croix and currently Dean of the Upper School at Country Day School, is the first woman to officially represent the Virgin Islands  in long distance running competition.  In 1984 she ran the World Cross-Country Championships in Meadowlands, NJ. It was the first time the prestigious event was ever held in the United States.  In 1986 she ran the World Cross-Country Championships in Neuchatel, Switzerland.  She was the dominant woman long distance runner in the Virgin Islands in 1980’s.

Los Angles will be her second marathon, her first was 10 years ago in the D.C. Marathon in Washington, D.C.

Bill Gladfelter is known as one of top cyclist in Virgin Islands history.  He has set numerous course and race records and has officially represented the Virgin Islands in cycling over the years.  In the early 80’s he competed in the first triathlons held in the Territory and dominated them.  He continues to cycle and cross-train.  L.A. will also be his second marathon, his first was also the D.C. Marathon.
