4-H Cross-Country Runners Numbers Increase...
10/15/03 St. Croix, Virgin Islands--Never has there been so many school runners run the cross-country course at the University of the Virgin Islands-St. Croix Campus as there have been over the past three years. The 4-H/V.I. Pace Runners Cross-Country Series offers all schools in St.Croix the opportunity to participate in this, the traditional running activity. There are four races with the first three serving as build-up races for the final event on Veterans Day. The event is hosted by the UVI Cooperative Extension Service-4H Program; it is sponsored by The Boys to Men, Girls To Women Love Foundation; it is organized by the Virgin Islands Pace Runners and it is sanctioned by the Virgin Islands Track and Field Federation.
This is the third year for this event, however, 4H and V.I.Pace Runners held runs back in the earlier 80’s when Ralix Clovis and Betsy Gladfelter were the top runners around at the time. Then the activity center around weekly Saturday morning fitness runs that were fun and fitness runs as well as competitive races. Currently the event is in its third year with an average of 90 plus children, young adults and adults participating in the four races. Many of the runners in these events have gone on to gain scholarships and completed college; some have represented the Virgin Islands in international competition including the Central America and Caribbean Cross-Country Championships, the Pan American Games and the Olympic Games.
